Cross Country to Pickering - The North Yorkshire Moors Railway

Cross Country to Pickering

Running through superb National Park scenery for the whole of its 18 miles, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway brings spine-tingling action as locomotives attack the unyielding three-mile-long gradient of 1-in-49 from virtually a standing start at Grosmont to Goathland, the village known as Aidensfield - focal point of ITV's successful Heartbeat series. Dating back to 1836, the line boasts one of the oldest railway tunnels in the world, and with a diverse fleet of home-based steam locomotives including 'Q7' 0-8-0 No.901, 'J27' 0-6-0 No. 65894, 'J72' 0-6-0 No. 69023 Joem, 'Schools' 4-4-0 No. 30926 Repton, 'West Country' Pacific No. 34101 Hartland and 'Black Five' 4-6-0 No. 45428, a galaxy of stirring sights and sounds is guaranteed. Action from all these, along with rousing footage featuring two powerful visitors - Hughes/Fowler 'Crab' 2-6-0 No. 42765 and former Great Western 2-8-0 heavy tank No. 4277 - is included. This comprehensive video also gives a detailed history of this, one of Britain's longest and most spectacular heritage lines, along with the full story of each station en route.
