Pacifics in Preservation

Roaming the Railways of Britain - Pacifics in Preservation

The most glamorous of steam locomotives to grace the rail network of Britain were those built to the 4-6-2 wheel arrangement. Known as pacifics they were often found heading the most prestigious of express passenger trains of their day. Several surviving examples of pacific design are seen in action in this programme.

Main Line Steam

Roaming the Railways of Britain -
Main Line Steam

Since steam made a return to the British National Rail Network in the early 1970s it seams to have gained in strength, regardless of talk that the mighty steam locomotives of the past may once again be expelled from our main line scene. We can still re-live the nostalgic past, as far as railways are concerned in this country, with excursions taking place somewhere in Britain almost every week of the year. Here we take a look at steam in action across the country as it rubs shoulders with modern motive power in the 21st century.

Roaming the Railways of East Anglia & the East Midlands

Roaming the Railways of Britain -
Preserved Railways of East Anglia and the East Midlands

In the heyday of rail travel in this area of Britain a variety of railway routes existed. Some served the coastal resorts of East Anglia, where many lines passed through the rural areas that are very much the nature of Norfolk and Suffolk. In contrast, others attended to the needs of the cities and towns of the East Midlands, which created a much heavier demand on the railways here. Five, today preserved, privatley run, railways that can be found in this region of the country are featured in this programme.

Preserved Railways of Northern England & Scotland

Roaming the Railways of Britain -
Preserved Railways of Northern England and Scotland

Northern England was in effect the birth place of railway development in Britain, particularly following the development of steam power and the need to transport bulk loads of raw materials and products around the country due to the advent of the industrial revolution.
Railways blossomed here with the steady growth of industry in the region.
Across the border in Scotland, industrialisation took place in areas such as Glasgow but also here the ever growing prescence of railways resulted in often remote and far flung comunities becoming, in effect, far better connected with the rest of the world.
No less than 7 heritage railways feature from the current day preservation era.

Preserved Railways of South & East England

Roaming the Railways of Britain -
Preserved Railways of South & East England

Several closed railway lines, many brought to the end of their days by the infamous 'Beeching Axe", have been brought back to life by hard working groups of enthusiasts based at various sites around the country. This brand new series of titles splits Britain into five regions and looks at the major preserved railways within each area.
This first programme in the series takes a look at the South East of England, where the preservation movement started even before steam had ceased being part of the every day railway scene.

Our roads where much quieter places before cars became a major part of peoples lives in Britain and lorries where not seen around in great numbers either.

The preserved railways in the south and west bring all this back to mind. The sleepy West Country branch line that once served the rural communities, to the seaside branch, its all brought back to life here as we look at a further five preserved lines.

Roaming the Railways of Britain -
Preserved Railways of Wales and the West Midlands

Whilst Wales, in terms of railways, is steeped in a tradition of narrow gauge railway lines here we concentrate on the standard gauge routes that have successfully been revived as Preserved Railways, having once been closed as part of railway rationalisation moves in Britain.
